Sore After Massage? Here's Why and What to Do.

If you haven't had a massage before, you may expect it to be a 100% relaxing experience. While massage therapy is relaxing, it can also be strenuous on your body. It's not uncommon to feel a little soreness after a massage, especially if it's your first time or you're not used to having your muscles worked on.

I'm here to break down exactly why this happens, and what you can do about it.

Why Am I Sore After My Massage?

When your muscles aren’t used to certain motions, you’re sure to feel a bit sore. Here are 5 reasons that you may feel a little sore a day or two after your session at my Largo massage studio:

1. Your Body isn't Used to the Massage

Just like any new physical activity, your body isn't used to being massaged and may be a little sore afterward. This is normal and should go away after a few massages.

2. The Therapist was Too Hard on You

If the therapist was too rough or applied too much pressure, it can leave you feeling sore. Make sure to only work with licensed and trusted massage therapists like me. This will help ensure you are in good hands. Always tell your massage therapist if any motions feel like too much. That way we can adjust during your massage session.

Always communicate with your therapist during the massage and let them know if the pressure is too much.

3. You Had Many Knots or Trigger Points

Knots and trigger points are areas of muscle tension that can be painful when touched. They are a very common cause of back pain, and massaging these areas can help to release the tension. However, it can also leave you feeling a little sore afterward.

4. You Have an Injury

If you have an injury, massage can actually help to heal it. However, it can also aggravate the area and leave you feeling sore. Be sure to let your therapist know if you have any prior injuries so they can avoid those areas. Or use lighter pressure there until you’re fully healed.

5. You're Dehydrated

Dehydration can lead to less blood flow through your muscles, which can make them feel sore after a massage. Make sure to drink plenty of water before and after your massage (and all day) to help avoid this.

Drink plenty of water before & after your massage to help avoid soreness.

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Warm up before your massage

  • Communicate everything with your therapist

  • Use ice afterward (10-15 minutes)

  • Take a hot bath
