Is Ashiatsu Better than Deep Tissue Massage
If you've been exploring different types of massage therapies, you've likely come across deep-tissue massage and Ashiatsu. Both have well-established reputations, and each offers unique benefits.
But which one might be, dare we say, better?
I, Steven at Libertas Massage have curated this article for a quick comparison of Ashiatsu and deep tissue to help you decide which modality is right for you.
Discover Deep Tissue Massage
This type of therapy is aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia. A therapist, like me, applies slower strokes or friction techniques across the grain of the muscle, focusing on releasing tension and knots.
It's a favored method for working out stress and chronic pain. It serves a high value in aiding injury recovery as well as promoting relaxation.
What else can it do?
Alleviates chronic muscle pain.
Breaks up scar tissue.
Improves blood pressure.
Enhances muscle function.
Improves posture.
Encourages our body’s natural healing process.
You might be wondering how it manages to do all of this.
Well, this technique is designed to get to the root of any long-standing muscle pain or tension.
Note: It is important to recognize that this technique can sometimes lead to soreness during or immediately after. This is your body's natural response, and it typically subsides within a day or two.
Ashiatsu Massage
This is a form of barefoot massage, where I will use my feet to deliver broad compression strokes.
Known as the 'deepest, most luxurious massage on earth', Ashiatsu uses gravity to drive as far as the tissues allow without causing pain or discomfort.
Barefoot practitioners of Ashiatsu use safety bars overhead for balance as they deliver effective treatments via their feet, targeting your body's specific trigger points.
Sounds unconventional, doesn't it? It might, but this method has a myriad of benefits that could potentially outshine your typical session. Why? Because the unique heel and ball-of-the-foot techniques of Ashiatsu provide a larger surface area of contact.
In many instances, this approach proves more effective in working out knots and muscle adhesions, commonly known as ‘trigger points’, than traditional massages.
Who would have thought those footprints could ever lead to such a relaxing destination?
Precautions and Contraindications
When it comes to both techniques, understanding the precautions and contraindications is key to ensuring a safe and beneficial experience.
Though generally considered safe for most individuals, both practices carry potential risks that need to be considered.
Ashiatsu
Although this method is quite effective, it's worth mentioning that it may not be suitable for everyone.
You should consult with your doctor before attempting this if you have health conditions such as:
Osteoporosis
High blood pressure
Varicose veins
Pregnancy
Have had recent surgery
Have open wounds
Deep Tissue Massage
It's crucial to communicate your comfort level with the practitioner throughout the session since the pressure can sometimes lead to soreness or discomfort.
Avoid this method if you have health conditions such as:
Blood clots or are at risk of forming blood clots
Severe osteoporosis
Certain skin conditions
If you are recovering from surgery
As always, your safety and well-being are the priority. Therefore, it's good practice to consult with a professional health provider before trying any new form of bodywork therapy, especially if you have underlying health concerns.
